Ethnic Wear For All Body Types

Ethnic Wear For All Body Types

The wedding season is here and wearing the ethnic Indian garment right is extremely important. We Indian women come in different shapes and sizes and that’s the beauty of our culture but what exactly should we wear when it comes to our particular body type? Here is a guide for the kind of ethnic wear that your body needs

Pear Shaped Body ( Small upper body and wider lower body)

For this kind of body type, we need to balance the upper and the lower body equally.

Kurtis and Anarkalis choose fits that emphasize the waist line. We can also play with the prints like a fitted straight Kurti with straight lines. Fits which are lighter at the bottom and embellished on the upper part can be opted.

Go for Lehengas which are designed in such a way that it can be tucked slightly higher than the waist. Sarees must be fluid and even an open pallu can be taken. One can choose Victorian style blouses which will draw attention to the upper body.

Fabrics – Structured fabrics, like cotton, poplin or even net can be used.

Hourglass shape ( Balanced Proportions)

Any fitted drape would look good on this body type. Body hugging Kurtas and Fish-cut skirts or Lehengas can be chosen for a fresh look.

A well draped saree or a pre- draped Saree with stylish accentuating blouse would define your curves beautifully.

Bodycon dresses and tops should be your go to for any event.

Fabrics– Stretchy fabrics like Lycra, Jersey and Spandex can be used for garments.

Rectangle Shaped (Straight Body with less definition between upper and lower body)

The Key focus in this type of body shape should be the creation of a little structure and the illusion of curves.

The best kind of clothes to choose from are the ones that are peplum style. Kurta sets which flare up from the bottom like A-line or pleated.

Peplum blouses with Sharara are also a good option.

Richer drapes in Saree like Banarasi and Kanjivaram can balance out your body shape. Choose long sleeves or puff sleeves blouses.

Lehengas with gathers like South Indian styles and a choli that is slightly would accentuate the illusion of curves. Puffy Lehenga with can-can could be used.

Fabrics – To create volume in the drape fabrics which are thick and heavy like Brocade, Banarasi or Cotton can be added

Inverted triangle ( Wide shoulders and Narrow Bottom)

The key focus here should be to soften the upper body and add more depth to the lower body.

One should refrain from boxy styles. Sleeves like bell sleeves and sweetheart necklines should be used. Straight Kurtas with full sleeves would look good.

Lehengas with more flare should be chosen. Deep necklines and covered shoulders will look more balanced.

Front pleated saree would add more volume to the bottom as the flare would fall down. Blouses should be kept loose and comfy with longer sleeves.

Soft A-line Anarkali would add grace and draw the attention away from shoulders.

Fabrics – Softer fabrics like Satin, Chiffon and organza can be used for a better proportion of the body.

Apple body type ( slim legs with around upper body)

Here the Key Focus will be to balance the both upper and lower body .

For Kurtas and Anarkali you can actually opt for silhouettes which are long and flowy like straight or A line Kurtis. Full floor length anarkali gowns with a defined empire waist can elongate the look of the torso hence balancing the whole body proportion.

for Lehengas and Saree one must go for flared bottom and a slightly loose Choli. It helps create an even proportion.

For Sarees a pleated drape can look fantastic with a matching fitted blouse that can accentuate the waist.

Fabrics – Choose fabrics, which are lighter like Crepe, Georgette and silk which provides structure without adding any bulk.
